During our discussion I heard what a lot of people are saying about politics today. You cannot change it and when you give into it you will realize that it is the only way to get things done. Years ago the reform movement swept across the prairies that would change Ottawa for the better and it never happened. I was there when Stephen Harper said a promise made by the Conservative Party of Canada was a promise made and kept but how many of those promises did he break and where is the reformed government that was promised. In my opinion the federal reform movement failed.
My friend sat in the legislature as an MLA and currently works for his party and I value his opinion as he has seen our government process first hand and knows how the system works. I disagree with my friend base on that our provincial government system is outdated and is falling apart. The people feel they are not listened to by our government or major political parties and therefore quit.
When I ran for office during the 2008 Provincial Election I did a rant on Breakfast Television. All the candidates before me were going on how great their party was and what they could do should you elect them. I realized that I had one free minute to say what I really wanted and I may never get a chance to do it again. I went up and said that our government failed us and that the opposition parties were all too busy trying to get their next photo opportunity to care what you, the voter, wanted. I said I did not care if they voted for me but to stand up for something because if you do not you would fall for anything.
We can change government. We can make Alberta a decent place to live in by letting the people take back their voice in our legislature. This is the time where we make a difference, the kind that our children and our children's children read in their history books as a time when we stood up to a corrupted government and reformed it.
The Big Listen that the Alberta Party has offered to all Albertans is one of those first steps in changing our government. This is the first time an Alberta political party will build their policy platform that was created by Albertans who want a better government. Sure, other political parties will try to impress you with creating a panel of experts who would tell you what you they think you want but to me that is nothing more than a gimmick. Our current government uses that gimmick all the time and look where it has gotten us. Alberta Party suspended their own existing policy platform, which will be reintroduced at our policy convention to be voted on, so that there is a clean slate to start from.
I heard the people cry out they want change and now there is a tool for them to use to make this happen. The ball is in your court, you get to decide if you want to continue with what you have or take that first step and make your voice heard. You have nothing to lose and much to gain by getting involved with the Alberta Party's Big Listen.
